Interior designers and linen experts dive deep into the benefits and price of this popular bedding material. Linen sheets and other linen bedding items have been on trend for quite some time, with enthusiasts praising their natural antibacterial qualities, breathability, laidback aesthetic, and impressive durability. We've reached out to professional designers and linen bedding experts to answer the questions you might be asking yourself before investing in linen bedding for your home.
Linen vs. Other Bedding Materials
How does linen bedding differ from other common materials like cotton or polyester? To begin with, linen is made from the flax plant, whereas cotton comes from the cotton plant, and polyester is synthetic. The flax plant produces coarser fibers, making linen bedding, whether sheets or duvet covers, feel a bit rough or even "crunchy" when used for the first time. However, this texture lends a distinctive appearance—linen has a more relaxed and wrinkled look compared to smoother materials like cotton.
Linen bedding comes with a range of health, quality, and sleep-related advantages, but it is often priced higher than other options. Although it starts off with a "crunchy" feel, linen softens progressively with each wash. Experts suggest avoiding traditional fabric softeners and instead using baking soda to soften the fabric naturally.

Why Is Linen More Expensive Than Other Bedding Materials?
A high-quality linen sheet set can range from $200 to $350, while cotton sheets are available for about $50 to $100. So, why is there such a significant price gap? It all boils down to how the material is harvested and processed.
“Linen fiber is harder to cultivate and more costly to extract than cotton," explains Megan Fowler. "The fiber is hidden within the stalks of the flax plant, and extracting it involves a longer, more labor-intensive process." Fowler goes on to mention that linen fiber is naturally inelastic, which makes it prone to breaking during production, particularly when weaving machines apply tension. "To avoid this, machines must operate at lower speeds, reducing output and thus driving up costs.”
Additionally, flax used for linen production is primarily grown in Western Europe, where specific climate and soil conditions are ideal for its cultivation. This limited regional production contrasts with cotton, which is grown globally. The restricted supply and more labor-intensive process contribute to the higher price of linen bedding.
Benefits of Linen Bedding
Why is linen bedding becoming so popular now? It’s by no means a new material—linen has been used for bedding for centuries. We consulted both a designer and a bedding expert to understand why linen is experiencing a resurgence in popularity.
Hypoallergenic and Naturally AntibacterialLinen is hypoallergenic, which makes it an excellent choice for those with sensitive skin. Additionally, it dries quickly when it absorbs moisture, creating a less favorable environment for bacteria. Linen contains lignin and silica, both of which help fend off bacterial growth. As people become more conscious about health and home products, linen bedding is often seen as a top option, especially in wellness circles.
Breathable and AbsorbentLinen’s breathability sets it apart from other materials. It helps regulate body temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, making it a versatile option for year-round comfort. It also absorbs moisture, such as sweat, improving your sleep experience.
“Linen, our most breathable fabric, has moisture-wicking properties that make it even cooler than cotton," adds Fowler.
Relaxed AestheticDon't worry about ironing your linen sheets—its wrinkled, lived-in look is part of its charm. Some even argue that these natural creases make linen appear more sophisticated and luxurious.
Interior designer Lindye Galloway shares her thoughts: "Linen bedding is trending for multiple reasons, especially its aesthetic. It strikes the perfect balance between luxury and comfort, while its minimalist appearance fits seamlessly into various design styles."
Fowler echoes this sentiment: “It’s ideal for those who want a high-end, laidback vibe, as the rumpled texture really elevates a space!”
DurableAccording to Fowler, linen is far more durable than many other fabrics, meaning it will last much longer. While the initial investment might be higher, its longevity can save you money over time.
“Linen sheets are perfect for those seeking to invest in bedding that will continue to soften and perform well for many years,” Fowler explains.
