5 Feng Shui Mistakes You Might Be Making in Your Home
Experts reveal the items that can cause negative energy, and how to rid your space of them successfully. As a professional organizer, I’ve seen firsthand how the wrong items can disrupt the harmony of a home. My goal is always to help my clients (and myself) create spaces that not only look clean but feel balanced and peaceful. One thing that is surprisingly common in households but often overlooked is how clutter and certain items can hinder the flow of positive energy. It goes beyond just making a space look messy—it actually affects the energy and mood within the home.
The ancient Chinese practice of feng shui is all about cultivating positive energy in every aspect of your life, starting with your living environment. The placement of furniture, decor, and even the color schemes in your home are integral to this. However, it’s not just about what you add to your space, but also about what you need to remove. Clutter is one of the most common obstacles to a harmonious home, but there are other surprising items that could be secretly damaging your home's feng shui energy.
We’ve consulted with feng shui experts and designers to bring you a list of common items you might want to reconsider keeping in your space. Some of these may seem obvious, but others might surprise you! If you're wondering what these items are, keep reading to find out how to remove them and improve the energy in your home.
Oversized Furniture
Another item that could be making your home look and feel cluttered is furniture that’s simply too large for your space. "Remember, the key is to harmonize, not overwhelm your space," says Turner, a renowned feng shui expert. According to her, furniture should infuse your home with positive energy and intention, not take over the room. That massive sofa your great aunt passed down may be sentimental and cozy, but if it overwhelms your living room and throws off the balance of the space, it's time to rethink it. Feng shui is not just about comfort—it's about balance and flow. A smaller, well-fitting piece of furniture that fits comfortably into the room will contribute much more to your home's harmony. Turner explains, "In essence, feng shui is about balance and intentional placement," and this includes choosing furniture that matches the size and style of the room you intend to put it in.
Clutter
“Feng shui is all about creating balance, harmony, and inviting opportunities into your life,” says Kathy Morris, author and feng shui specialist. According to Morris, if you want these opportunities to manifest, you need to ensure that energy can flow freely into and throughout your home. Clutter is one of the biggest obstacles to achieving this flow. From piles of old magazines on your coffee table to an overstuffed closet, clutter represents stagnant energy. It can create feelings of stress, overwhelm, and even confusion in the home.
Interior designer and feng shui expert, Anna Lanec, adds, “Think of things like a cluttered entryway with piles of shoes by the front door.” She emphasizes that clutter, especially when it's at eye level, can significantly add to stress and anxiety in your space. “Start with key areas like the entryway, where energy first enters your home, and work towards organizing other spaces like closets and pantries,” she suggests. By clearing clutter and organizing key areas of your home, you allow energy to move more freely, creating a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere throughout the house.
Dying Plants
Plants are symbols of life and growth in feng shui, so having dead or dying plants in your home can symbolize neglect and stagnant energy. Houseplants are meant to represent growth, vitality, and the nurturing of life, but if they're dying, they convey abandonment and lack of care. The good news is, you can usually save a struggling plant by learning how to properly care for it. However, if the plant is beyond saving, it's better to compost it rather than let it linger in your home, where it will continue to sap the room's energy.
According to Brady, a feng shui practitioner, adding fresh flowers or healthy plants can help bring a boost of fresh, positive energy into your home. Additionally, consider introducing plants that symbolize abundance, wealth, and prosperity, such as jade plants or lucky bamboo, to enhance the positive energy even more.

Broken items, whether they are small electronics or large furniture, can disrupt the flow of positive energy in your home. Mendoza, a feng shui expert, explains that broken appliances, burned-out light bulbs, or even a shattered vase can symbolize neglect and a stagnant life force in your home. One of the worst offenders, according to feng shui principles, is a broken clock. It represents time standing still and a lack of forward movement in life.
To fix this, make a habit of repairing or replacing broken items as soon as they get damaged. Even minor things like a broken drawer handle can have a subtle but significant impact on the energy of a room. If something is beyond repair, it's best to discard it to make room for new, positive energy.

Sharp Edges
Sharp edges, whether on furniture or decor, can create a sense of discomfort and unease in a room. Psychologically, we associate sharp points with danger, and this translates into a more stressful environment. In feng shui, soft, rounded edges are preferred because they promote a natural flow of energy throughout a room, making it feel more serene and balanced.
Recent trends in furniture design have embraced this idea, with an emphasis on curved pieces that have soft, flowing lines. Rounded edges and natural shapes not only feel safer and more comfortable but also reflect a more organic and peaceful vibe in your home. So, consider swapping out sharp, angular items for softer, rounder alternatives to invite a calming energy into your space.
